The company has been increasing its prices continuously for the past few years and implemented a significant hike in early 2022. The Basic streaming plan now costs $9.99, up from $8.99, and the Standard plan allows HD streaming. It costs $15.49, up from $13.99 per month.

The highest tier 4K Ultra HD streaming plan is now $19.99, a $2 increase from the previous price point of $17.99. Netflix is ​​the only streaming service that is priced based on streaming quality, with other options such as Disney+, Hulu, and Apple TV+ offering more direct pricing.

Netflix has long resisted implementing an ad-supported tier and has said several times in the past that the streaming service will never show ads, but it is losing subscribers. Netflix said in April that it lost subscribers in the first quarter of the year, marking the first subscriber loss for Netflix in more than a decade. Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers and is expected to lose two million more in the next quarter.

The loss of subscribers has been attributed to account swaps, which Netflix has said it will crack down on. Netflix told employees in the letter that it plans to reduce password sharing by restricting access to home-sharing customers. Netflix estimates that there are 222 million paying households sharing with an additional 100 million homes that are not being monetized.

Netflix began testing additional payments for people who share their Netflix accounts with people outside of their homes in March. In Netflix’s existing test markets of Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, subscribers can pay an additional fee to share their account with up to two people outside their home country. When the trial began, Netflix said it was working to “understand the usefulness of these two features” before making changes in other countries.
